Cake and Dessert

So let's talk about cake. Cake is a fabulous delicacy--I really love it. For those who don't like cake, there's always pie, mousses, puddings, and a wide variety of cakes and squares, too.
My favourite is this to-die-for lemon curd and whipped cream cake, a recipe I got from the now-defunct Gourmet Magizine (snif, snif, I miss you Gourmet!), which until a few years ago had the most fantastic (and sometimes unbelievable) recipes.
Sadly, I have not yet mastered the art of making pie-pastry, which really is an art. I can make wonderful, flaky, buttery Danish pastry, of the sort suitable for filling with all sorts of yummy fruits, creams, etc, but have never even tried to make pie-pastery. I'm not even sure why...I suppose it's because when my mother used to make pastry when I was a kid, it's not really the kind of the one can get little kids to help with, although with almost everything else she let me help a lot, which is where I got most of my cooking skills in the first place.
It's sad that most parents don't teach their boy children to cook; in that respect the world is still a very sexist place, which I heartily regret. Too bad--the world would be a much happier place if more men could cook good food! Oh well. To each their own, right? Just don't forget I told you so!
